Branson, summer and Fun go together

Branson Tourism Center celebrates 10 years of sharing Branson with the world

BRANSON, MO, May 24, 2013 — In its first decade of sharing what Branson offers with prospective visitors and helping them experience it, the Branson Tourism Center (BTC) has grown from its initial three employees to over 85 and has become Branson’s largest seller of show and attraction tickets and lodging. When asked the reason for BTC’s phenomenal success, Tammy Johnson, the Director of Operations for the Branson Tourism Center said, “It is a combination of the positive message that BTC shares about all the great shows, attractions and other things Branson offers and our passion and ability to keep that message fresh, exciting and meaningful for potential Branson visitors.”

That thought was strongly reinforced by Lianne Milton, co-owner of the Branson Tourism Center with her husband Larry, who said, “Our passion and commitment to Branson and the visitors we serve is the same today as it was our very first day in business; making sure that each and every one of our customers, starting with the planning of their trip, has a great Branson experience.” Milton points out that like Branson itself, BTC is in the business of forming relationships and that BTC’s “If it’s important to you, it’s important to me” philosophy has helped it establish the meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships with its customers, vendors and employees that enables BTC to consistently provide its customers with that “great Branson experience.”

For that to happen there had to be change in the way things had always been done. Price Is Right Live show “Springs” into 2013 Branson Season

BRANSON, MO, May 23, 2013 — When The Price Is Right Live starts its 2013 season in Branson, tomorrow, its initial host will be well known TV star and personality Jerry Springer. Earlier in the week this writer had the opportunity to interview Springer (JS), on behalf of the Branson Tourism Center (BTC), one of Branson’s largest and most respected vacation planning services, about his hosting of the show, his first trip to Branson and other items.

BTC – Have you been to Branson before?
JS – No.

BTC – Never having been to Branson, what is your perception of Branson?
JS – Middle America, family values and good time entertainment without all the craziness of the extremes of pop culture.

BTC – When did you first hear of “Branson?”
JS – Years ago from Andy Williams and more recently when I was hosting “Americas Got Talent” and the Duttons, from Branson, appeared on the show.

BTC – Will your time in Branson be part work and some play?
JS – Definitely. I am really looking forward to experiencing Branson and I’m not just telling you that for an interview.

BTC – What is the number one thing on your Branson Bucket List?
JS – I love live entertainment so my number one thing to do will be to see some of its live shows.

BTC – How long have you been the guest host on the “Price Is Right Live?”
JS – I have been working with “Freemantle Media” for a few years doing their live shows for “America’s Got Talent,” “Price is Right,” “Family Feud” and “Let’s Make A Deal.” I have been doing the “Price Is Right Live” show for about two years.

BTC – What do you like most about hosting the show?
JS – The chance to interact and joke around with the contestants. To me the game is secondary. What I enjoy most is just interacting with regular folks and having a good time.

BTC – Why should people come and see the Price Is Right Live Show in Branson?
JS – To maybe win some prizes, but mostly to simply have fun and spend time laughing and having a good time.

BTC – Is there a constant highlight for you that happens during each show?
JS – The joy of the show for me is discovering and exploring the personalities of the contestants on the show.

BTC – Why do you feel that the “Price Is Right” has been such an iconic show for so long?
JS – It’s easy for the shows viewers to become instantly involved. Unlike some other shows, they don’t have to be an expert in a particular area because the shows results hinge on the prices of items that most of the show’s viewers either shop for or are familiar with. If you think about the show it might have been one of TV’s first reality shows “staring” everyday folks providing entertainment on TV based on the reality of something that they do in their everyday life, “shopping.”

BTC – In your career you have done many things from running for governor to hosting radio and TV shows. Of it all, if you were going to pick one that meant the most to you what would it be?
JS –What I do now is fun, but in terms of significance and doing something that impacted on people’s lives, being the Mayor of Cincinnati was the best job I ever had. [Springer was elected by the City Council and served a one year term as Cincinnati’s mayor starting in 1977.]

Western style drift boats provide unique Lake Taneycomo Branson fly fishing experience

BRANSON, MO, May 21, 2013 – The words of Tammy Johnson, the Director of Operations for the Branson Tourism Center came to mind last week as I stood on the banks of Lake Taneycomo within sight of Table Rock Dam. She had said, “Branson’s shows, attractions, shopping, lakes and other activities provide a broad choice of things for its visitors to do, but what’s really great is the different specific options visitors have within those general choices.”

Take fishing for example, Branson’s two warm water lakes Table Rock and Bull Shoals Lakes are world class bass fisheries and the cold waters of Lake Taneycomo offer some of the finest Brown and Rainbow Trout fishing anywhere. Within the general category of trout fishing, Lake Taneycomo offers a variety of ways to fish from fishing off one of the fishing docks in downtown Branson, wading at Table Rock Dam or fishing from a boat to guided trout fishing trips of every kind.

I was brought out of my reverie as Carolyn Parker, who, in my opinion is one of the best fly fishers around, male or female, and the co-owner of River Run Outfitters with her husband Stan, who is no mean shake of a fly fisher himself, walked up. She had been kind enough to offer to take me fishing as she went out on her day off to continue the eternal quest of exploring for new “layups.” No, not the basketball shot, but a place where their guides can position their boats, either with oars or an anchor so that their clients can fly fish efficiently.

And that brings us to one of the most unique fishing opportunities available in Branson and one of the most peaceful and serene ways to view the beauty of upper Lake Taneycomo. It’s hard to imagine a better way to do that than by taking a guided River Run Outfitters fly fishing trip in one of their McKenzie western style drift boats that have no motors and are powered by, as Parker says, “‘people power’ rowing them.”

That’s right, shades of the trout fisheries of Montana and Wyoming, visitors to Branson can actually enjoy a “western style” drift trip within ten minutes of the shows, shopping, attractions and everything else Branson has to offer. And it’s the “real deal, River Run Outfitters has been an Orvis Endorsed Outfitter since 2000, won the prestigious “Orvis Outfitter of the Year award for 2006 and has been finalists for a number of years including the last three years.

Some might ask, “They won over some of the big outfitters from out west?” Absolutely, the combination of the beauty of Lake Taneycomo, the service provided by River Run Outfitters and the quality of the fishery are simply amazing. Parker is a member of the International Women Fly Fishers (IWFF), has completed the “Fly Casting Instructors Course” given by Joan Wulff and, when she’s not managing River Run Outfitters full service Orvis fly shop or guiding clients, is probably fly fishing Lake Taneycomo.

She has had the opportunity to fly fish around the country in fisheries such as Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, Idaho, Utah and others. When asked how she would rate Lake Taneycomo as a trout fishery she said that both in terms of the quantity of fish caught and the total fly fishing experience, it is one of the best fisheries she has every fished particularly so in the “Trophy” or “Special Regulations of the lake in the upper three miles of the Lake starting at Table Rock Dam.

She did point out however, that if they are running water through Table Rock Dam for the generation of power, that wade fly fishing near the dam becomes increasingly more difficult, in terms of the space available to fish, water depth and the speed of the current as they increase the amount of generation and becomes just about impossible if they are generating more than 3,000 cfs. “Our drift boats are specifically designed for those conditions and provide fly fishers a way to have a great fly fishing experience regardless of whether or not power is being generated and in the vast majority of cases catch trout.”

They were generating about 6,000 cfs when Parker launched the boat and rowed us to our first layup which was actually upstream a bit from where we launched. Because of the unique style of the boat and its limited draft, the guides have extreme flexibility and can maneuver the boats, drop their anchor and position them on a current break, the edge of an eddy or just about anywhere else they want to position the boat and can even row against the current for short distances.

During our five hour trip we caught and released over 30 Rainbow Trout with the largest being 16 inches, had about 12 “rodeo fish,” on for less than 8 seconds, and missed easily twice that many, but that’s what makes it fishing. Our primary setup was a tandem rig consisting of a size 12 Big Ruby and a size 16 Red Ribbed Midge tied about 12 inches below the Big Ruby and fished under an indicator. We also got to do some stripping with intermediate sink tip line using the CQ Streamer. What a great time fishing, just being outdoors and spending time with and getting to watch one of the best fly fishers on Lake Taneycomo do her magic.

Imagine, the very violin that played ‘Nearer My God To Thee’ as the greatest maritime tragedy of all time was unfolding, over 101 years ago, will have its first and only American displays at the Titanic Museum Attractions in Pigeon Forge and Branson; how special is that?” Milton’s comments followed the press release by Titanic Museum Attractions earlier this morning that the long lost violin of the Titanic’s bandmaster, Wallace Hartley, commonly referred to as the “Titanic Violin” will be displayed in America exclusively and for a limited time only at the Titanic Museum Attractions, first in Pigeon Forge, TN from May 23 to July 27 and in Branson, MO from August 1 to September 7.

The band and their courageous act of continuing to play “Nearer My God To Thee” in the midst of the frantic and hectic activity taking place all around them as the doomed ship gradually sank into her frigid watery grave was described by one newspaper at the time as an act that “Will rank among the noblest in the annals of heroism at sea“ and has played a pivotal role in the memory of that horrific night in books, movies and other depictions of the event. News accounts indicate that Hartley’s body was found floating 10 days after the sinking with his violin in his leather valise, with some jewelry, strapped to his chest above his life vest.

There is general agreement that it was returned to Maria Robinson, who was Hartley’s fiancée and had given it to him in 1910 when they became engaged. Reports indicate that after her death in 1939 the violin was given to “a Major Renwick of the Bridlington Salvation Army” who then gave it to a violin teacher who gave it to the mother of the current owner, in whose family it has been in for the last 70 years, many of them in an attic, until it was discovered by her son in 2006 when he found it in a leather case with the initials “WHH” engraved on it.

He, while remaining anonymous, turned it over to the auction house of Henry Aldridge and Son of Wiltshire, England, because of their expertise in dealing with Titanic artifacts and memorabilia, for authenticity. That process has taken a number of years and involved both extensive forensic testing of the violin and its silver engraved plate reading “For Wallace on the occasion of our engagement from Maria” as well as the examination of a trail of documentary evidence.

The results have led experts to much the same conclusion as that expressed by Craig Sopin, owner of one of the largest private Titanic collections of artifacts and memorabilia. He said, “To say that I was skeptical at first would be an understatement. But after I conducted an exhaustively detailed investigation into the history and forensics of the instrument, I became convinced beyond a doubt that this violin belonged to Wallace Hartley and that is was with him on the Titanic.”

John Joslyn, the owner of Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge, TN and Branson, MO said, “After careful review of all the facts, we agree with the experts that this violin belonged to Wallace Hartley, bandleader on RMS Titanic. We’re honored our museums are the only two in the United States to display this important artifact and share the Wallace Hartley story.”

After the violin’s final American display at the Branson Titanic Museum Attraction from August 1 through September 7 it is scheduled to travel back to England for auction by Henry Aldridge and Son on Saturday, Oct. 19. Due to this historical exhibit, for the first time the museum will host a special VIP preview at 8:30 a.m. everyday starting, in Branson, on August 1 which will be limited to 25 people per day. Branson show review: Rankin Brothers Classic Music Review

BRANSON, MO, May 14, 2013 – In a previous review of this show I said, “One does not just ‘see’ the Rankin Brothers Show they experience it and what a wonderful experience it is. From beginning to end it is a wonderful musical journey through the classic music hits and super stars of the 50s through the 90s. It will bring back memories to those who actually heard the music in real time and create new memories for a generation that was not even born when this timeless music was first performed.” Those words were true when I wrote them for the first time and, after seeing the show the evening of May 10, all I can say is “Ditto!.”

From their full cast opening number of Neil Diamond’s 1966 hit “Cherry, Cherry” to their finale, Chuck Berry’s 1958 rock and roll hit, “Johnny B. Goode” the Rankin Brothers Classic Music Revue is a non-stop musical entertainment extravaganza presented by some of the most talented, energetic and “audience personable” vocalists and instrumentalists in Branson. And it’s more than just talent; during the two plus hours that the show runs, as the cast performs over 50 numbers, it is obvious to the audience that they love not only doing what they do, but the music they are performing. It was interesting to watch the audience reaction as people who were not even born when many of these songs were popular seem to “catch” and share the excitement, fun and emotion of Mark, Matt and the rest of the cast. It makes for a very special, fun filled and entertaining experience.

Although, if you closed your eyes and just listened to many of the songs being performed you would swear that you were hearing the original artists, the show is not a “recreation” show like the “Legends of Concert.” It is more a “replication” of the classic songs “the way you remember hearing them.” As one who heard a number of these performers and groups “real-time” during the height of their careers, I can attest to the fact that it is that and much more. And it gets better because in a number of songs, quite a few as a matter of fact, that sound is enhanced by the “appearance” of the performer themselves such as, among others, “Sonny and Cher,” Mark Rankin and Lori Kelley; “Elvis,” Mark Rankin; “Buddy Holly,” Matt Rankin and many more which adds variety, excitement and, in some cases, a little comedy to an already excellent show

The set, costuming and the use of full screen videos in the background and on the sides all add to the overall entertainment experience, but it is the musical performances that touch the heart and provide the wonderful memories and experience that is the Rankin Brothers show. The show’s stars, Matt and Mark Rankin are two of the most talented vocalists and guitar players in Branson both on their own and from a “replication” stand point. Whether it’s a duet performance of the inspirational “The Anchor Holds;” Matt’s performance of “Buddy Holly,” Mark’s tribute to “Elvis Presley” based on his “Aloha From Hawaii” concert or any of the dozens of other numbers they perform it is easy to see why they have won so many Branson awards and are so popular with their fans.

The casts two female vocalists, the very beautiful and talented Lori Kelly and Amy Cofer make up the “Rankinettes” who are not only the backup singers on the majority of the numbers, but perform solos throughout the show. They sing as beautifully as they are beautiful and their voices and infectious energy makes an already wonderful entertainment experience even more so. Add to that a live band composed of Cody Titus, Keys; Jim Murphy, Saxophone and Keys; Mitch Keirsey, Lead Guitar; Paul Stephans, Bass and Harmonica and Jeremy Castaldo, Drums and things just keep getting better.

If I were to pick some of my favorite numbers from among the many in the show, I would have to start with the all cast presentation of the American folk classic, “Shenandoah;” it was simply beautiful. On an individual basis Matt’s performance of “Peggy Sue” during his Buddy Holly Tribute brought back some wonderful memories and Marks performance of “My Way” during the “Elvis Presley Tribute” was wonderfully done. Lori Kelly did a great job with the Bette Midler song, “The Rose” as did Amy Cofer with the Chordettes 1958 hit “Lollipop.” The inspirational and emotional performance of the “The Anchor Holds” by Mark and Matt has become a signature number for the Rankin Brother’s and, once you have experienced their powerful and heartfelt performance of the song you will know why.

I can think of no better way to end a review on this show than by echoing the words of one person who saw the show recently and said, “Simply put, their show was great before, but even better this year. Way to go, Rankin Brothers and Rankinettes!” Yes indeed, “Way to Go,” what a great show.

Two for Branson shows comedy paradigm

BRANSON, MO, May 11, 2013 – Ever since 1991 when the CBS Prime Time news show “60 minutes” called Branson “The live music capital of the entire universe” Branson’s reputation for the quality, quantity and variety of its music shows has blossomed and grown. Along with its music shows however Branson offers a variety of other types of shows such as the skill and grace of the Acrobats of China, the world class magic and ventriloquism of the Hamner and Barber Varity Show or the fun and excitement of a game show like the Price Is Right Live to mention a few.

Ever since the Baldknobbers “started it all,” comedy has been a part of most Branson shows. The paradigm established by the Branson earliest pioneer shows, the Baldknobbers Jamboree and Presleys’ Country Music Jubilee, of having heavy coordinated musical and comedy elements throughout the show, has served Branson shows well.

Branson is full of great comedians and has even more who come in for limited engagement throughout the year. However, for this article we are going to take a look at the different comedy styles from two Branson shows that not only follow that paradigm, but have hilarious comedians who are masters of their craft. In addition, although both shows remain true to their country roots they offer a variety of music presented by some of the best vocalists in Branson, live bands and are open for the full Branson season.

Gary Presley, or “Herkimer” as he is known on stage, from Presleys’ Country Jubilee helped establish the paradigm and has been entertaining Branson audiences ever since the Presleys’ opened the first theatre on what is now known as “The Branson Strip in 1967. His combination of Ozark hillbilly dress and humor delivered in the form of one liners, jokes and comedy skits with some great props, special effects and working current events and interests into his routines has made him one of Branson’s funniest men for decades. Factor in the extremely funny antics of his son, Erik, “Cecil” on stage, and some of his action routines and you have a creative comedy duo that keeps their audience laughing and wondering about what they will come up with next.

Straight man, Bobby Blackburn, and Animal Control Officer Ray Bees a.k.a. Jarrett Dougherty

Jarrett Dougherty of the Pierce Arrow Show, is another very funny man who will have you laughing from the beginning to the end of the show with his comedy. His style is one of using different characters in his comedy and wow, is he good at it. “This year Dougherty starts the show with a new character, the funniest Animal Control Officer you will ever meet, Ray Bees who is in search of a snake that has escaped from the new Promised Land Zoo being built just east of the theatre. From there, the laughs just keep coming as he makes just about the whole cast, with special emphasis on Band Leader Bobby Blackburn, “his straight man,” as his hilarious comedic journey, among other places, takes the audience to the bible, the demise of the snake and the most beautiful, funny and unforgettable version of the Nat King Cole classic “Unforgettable” you will ever experience.”

This writer has sat in the audience at both of these shows and observed the reaction of children in the audience. They seem to be having love these guys and the color and variety that add to the musical element of the show as they laugh along with their parents at their antics and humor.

Sound of Bluegrass & aroma of BBQ permeate Silver Dollar City

BRANSON, Mo., May 9, 2013 — The smell of Ozark style cooking and the sound of people having fun are a routine part of a day at Silver Dollar City (SDC), but when those smells take on a BBQ aroma and the music has a distinctly bluegrass sound it can only mean one thing, it’s time for Silver Dollar City’s Bluegrass & BBQ Festival which will run through Memorial Day, May 27 and has been recognized by the “International Bluegrass Music Association” having received its “Bluegrass Event of the Year” award.

“What a combination of fun, excitement, music and food,” said Tammy Johnson, the Director of Operations for the Branson Tourism Center. She said that the festival activities are in addition to everything one expects from the 1880s styled award winning theme park such as 30 rides and attractions, including its new world breaking wooden coaster “Outlaw Run,” with its initial 162 foot 81 degree drop; dozens of demonstrating craftsmen; unique shopping and great live shows and entertainment. “When coupled with hundreds of performances by some of the best Bluegrass groups and artists in the country and the opportunity to taste just some of the finest BBQ and sauces around there’s simply no other experience like it anywhere,” she added.

The Bluegrass portion of the festival will include “more than 40 bands and hundreds of performances, from international award-winning musicians to the hottest new bands in bluegrass today.” These include Rhonda Vincent and her band “The Rage, ” as well as “the Grammy-nominated Grascals; Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, 6-time IBMA Vocal Group of the Year winners; Blue Highway, the IBMA Vocal Group of the Year; the Boxcars, featuring 9-time IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year and 5-time Grammy winner Adam Steffey; and the Gibson Brothers, winner of the 2012 IBMA Entertainer of the Year and up-and-coming bands in bluegrass, such as The Bankesters, the Snyder Family Band, the Hillbenders, Monroeville and more.” In addition there will be two national Bluegrass competitions, The Youth In Bluegrass Band Competition on May 25 featuring “amateur bluegrass musicians 21 years of age or younger” and the 7th Annual National Single Mic Championship” on May 18 which “highlights the performance skills” of each band as they perform “around a single microphone and balances their sound by moving toward or away from the microphone.”

The “BBQ” part of the festival includes the cooking and serving of thousands of  pounds of mouth watering BBQ prepared on “large outdoor charcoal grills and a custom-made 9-foot smoker.” In addition to Silver Dollar City’s famous flavor feast with “St. Louis ribs and smoked chicken to Texas brisket and sweet roasted corn on the cob” to the “all you-can-eat BBQ rib feast each afternoon” the flavors of two award winning BBQs, “Hawgwild BBQ” out of Aurora, Missouri and “Dickey’s Barbecue Pit” from Texas will also be featured. Guests will be able to sample over 100 different BBQ sauces including Silver Dollar City’s new Outlaw Run Zesty Honey sauce with a kick. The festivals BBQ offerings are in addition to the excellent food service normally available throughout the park.
