Test of Outlaw Run's world breaking 16 story 81 Degree initial drop.

They got the first indication of what is in store as the completed coaster started its final testing today. Today’s testing included coach train cycling over the course of the track fully loaded with “water dummies” simulating the average weight of humans and was witnessed by members of the media. This link, to a 53 second video of the actual test ,provides a Point of View (POV) look at what the dummies experienced and what the riders of Outlaw Run can expect, the ride of their lives!

The result is a wood coaster with never-done-before thrill elements.” Themed around the stagecoach travels in the old west, Outlaw Run’ will take its riders on a breath taking 1 minute 27 second ride, including a 81 degree, nearly vertical, initial drop of 16 stories, and a record breaking three inversions aboard the custom-designed “stagecoach” trains of “Silver Dollar City’s Western Missouri Stagecoach Company.”

“Ayo” plus “it” equals 5 letters and 2 great Branson shows

"Voices of Glory," Michael, Avery and Nadia Cole, during guest performance at 2012 CAM Gospel Sing-Off.

BRANSON, MO, February 4, 2013 – In announcing that “Ayo” would be appearing at the Hughes Brothers Theatre along with it, Jeff Topper, Director of Sales for the Hughes Brothers Theatre, did not mention the fact that there is not another theatre marquee in Branson that could announce it was presenting two shows and only take up a total of five letters. What he did say however was, “At the Hughes Brothers Theatre we’re already open with our hit show it and we’re excited about adding another upbeat show like ‘Ayo’ starring ‘Voices of Glory’ to our theatre line-up.”

“The Voices of Glory,” siblings Michael, Avery and Nadia Cole who started singing together in 2007 when they sang to their mother who was in a coma as the result of “a head-on collision with a drunk driver.” Their mother came out of the coma, those who heard the Coles sing realized they were hearing something special, they adopted the stage name “Voices of Glory,” kept on singing and in 2009 ended up as a top five finalist on the NBC prime time hit show, America’s Got Talent. Since then, among other things, toured “internationally, performing at the Annual GMA’s Dove Awards, the 2010 & 2011 ICM Awards, at Madison Square Garden, were a featured act in ‘Andy William’s 2012 Christmas Show,'” and performed in “Germany for Weihnachtszauber.”

Jason Hughes, one of the Hughes Brothers co-producing the show said, “In Ayo we’re taking the audience on a journey of joy using song, dance, lights, and the personalities of Michael, Avery, and Nadia, backed up by a live band.” In describing the show, Nadia Cole said, “Ayo adds another level to the Branson show mix. While Ayo features our original music, and of course our gospel favorites, it also reaches out to visitors of all ages with current and familiar songs that speak to the musical soul.” Michael Cole said, “We love the music and we love what music can do for people.  In Ayo we want the audience to feel what we feel when we sing – a pure call to joy!” and his brother Avery adds, “Ayo is also a slang term for ‘Hey you’…and we’re hoping that just like that term reaches out and grabs your attention…that Ayo will reach out and grab your heart!”

Tammy Johnson, the Director of Operations for the Branson Tourism Center, congratulates both the Hughes Brother’s Theatre staff and Voices of Glory on the new show. She points out that although Ayo’s premier is not until March 18 that it at the Hughes Brothers Theatre opened its 2013 season in January and is currently running a full schedule of shows. For additional information or tickets for “Ayo,” “it” or any of Branson’s other shows and attractions or for lodging arrangements please contact the Branson Tourism Center through their toll free number 1-800-785-1550.

Grand Jubilee just might be Branson’s grandest entertainment

"New South," Trey Wilson, left, Jason Robinson, Mark McCauley and David Price, during their opening set.

BRANSON, MO, February 1, 2013 — In a previous review of the Grand Jubilee this writer said, “It might seem like a cliché, but the Grand Jubilee is truly ‘grand’ entertainment. I laughed until I hurt, listened to some of the most talented musicians and vocalists I have ever heard, in Branson or anywhere else, and was thoroughly entertained by a fast moving production that held my interest throughout. It was over all too quickly.” After seeing the new 2013 edition of this show on January 25 of this year all this writer can say is “Ditto.”

In that review it was pointed out that the elements of the show aren’t that much different from the Branson variety show mold that was cast by the Baldknobbers over 52 years ago and has worked so successfully for so many Branson shows. They have vocals, a live band and comedy, but that’s like saying because a pie has ingredients 1, 2 and 3 that it’s going to be a great pie. It’s not the elements or ingredients by themselves, but the the quality of the talent involved with each element and how they are woven together that makes the Grand Jubilee the “grand” entertainment experience it is.

The main vocal element of the show features “New South,” one of Branson’s premier male quartets, composed of lead vocalist, Trey Wilson, tenor Jason Robinson, baritone David Price and bass Mark McCauley. Individually these guys have great voices, but when they sing together it is a WOW blow your socks off kind of thing not only in terms of the vocals themselves, but their energy and ability to convey the feeling to the audience that they are not just going through the motions, but having a good time.

New South performs a variety of music from many different genres including pop, country, gospel, patriotic, gospel and more covering decades of hits. As important as what they sing is how they sing it. In this writers opinion, as good as each is individually, combined they have a power, voice range and synergy that is amazing. Although certainly subjective the group’s performance of “Antioch Church House Choir,” featuring Trey Wilson ,”Elvira,” featuring the bass voice of Bass Mark McCauley  and “YMCA” are a few of many numbers illustrating not only New South’s vocal talent, but their ability to get the audience invested in the performance, the shows excellent costuming and some great moves. And speaking of “moves,” you won’t believe the moves Mark McCauley makes during the group’s performance of “YMCA.”

The beautiful and talented Jackie Brown,

The female vocalist is the extremely talented Jackie Brown. She performed a variety of music throughout the show demonstrating her considerable vocal talents. Her spirited rendition of the Dolly Parton song, “Baby I’m Burning” illustrates why it was one of Dolly’s favorite songs and her duet with Trey Wilson of “You Don’t Know Me” was simply beautiful.

It’s hard to describe just how good the “Grand Band” is and what an integral part of the show they are. It is composed of Michael W. Davis, Piano/Keyboard & Vocals; Wayne Massengale, Fiddle and Acoustic Guitar; Larry Allred, Bass Guitar; Rob Blackburn, Drums; Matt Hanshaw, Lead and Acoustic Guitar and Gene Mulvaney, Steel Guitar, Electric Guitar, Banjo & Band Director.

These guys just don’t sit back and play, they are seamlessly worked into many of the numbers of the show with featured segments in a way that makes the Grand Jubilee show unique among Branson shows. These guys are some of the most talented instrumentalists in Branson, both individually and collectively, enjoy what they are doing and convey that enjoyment to their audience. Two Band highlights was their rendition of what I believe was “The Grand Bounce” and Wayne Massengale’s fiddle duet of “Orange Blossom Special” Jamie Haage, who is also the show’s comedian.

"Jim Dandy," Jammie Haage, left and his faithful straight-man, the shows emcee and producer, Mike Patrick.

The multi-talented, Jamie Haage, who is one of Branson’s best comedians is the shows comedian and does an hilariously funny job of playing “Jim Dandy.” You’ve heard of “dark comedy,” well welcome to “orange comedy,” where, strategically placed throughout the show, Jim Dandy, along with his straight man, the shows Emcee Mike Patrick, will have you laughing until you hurt with a blend of comedy and one liners. It’s safe to say that after experiencing this show you will have a newly found appreciation for just how funny and magical a banana can be. Watching the metamorphosis of Haage from comedian to instrumentalist and vocalist is a special and unique thing to see and hear and testifies as to the versatility and talents of this “grand” entertainer.

No review of the Grand Jubilee would be complete without mentioning the shows Director and Producer Mike Patrick who is also the shows Emcee, Jim Dandy’s straight man and even plays a mean honky-tonk piano. This show is a wonderful blend of great music, comedy and fun that is simply a joy to see, hear, and experience. From its opening number to its stirring patriotic finale, the Grand Jubilee is a ‘grand’ entertainment experience that just might be two of the best and fastest moving hours of entertainment in Branson.

Midwest Living designates Branson as a “Great Midwest Winter Weekend Escape”

Open, even in the snow, the distinctive earthquake look of "Ripley's Believe" It Or Not" makes it one of the most identifiable buildings in the world.

BRANSON, Mo., January 28, 2013 — “We thought it was ‘cool’ when Branson was designated as one of the 25 Coolest Midwest Lake Vacation Spots by ‘Midwest Living'” in the summer of 2011, but Midwest Living’s recent designation of Branson as one of the 15 Great Midwest Winter Weekend Escapes is really ‘cool,'” said Tammy Johnson, the Director of Operations for the Branson Tourism Center. “That’s one of the great things about Branson, summer or winter, it’s always a ‘cool’ place to have fun, be entertained, shop, simply relax, or enjoy any of the many other exciting activities Branson offers year round for individuals, families, reunions and groups of all types,” she continued.

In designating Branson as one of the ’15 Great Midwest Winter Weekend Escapes’ the article specifically mentions the beauty of the woods around Table Rock Lake, the simple joy of sipping hot chocolate and enjoying Branson’s “winter landscape from the other side of a picture window.” It emphasizes that even in January and February “the weather is often mild enough by Midwest standards (average highs in the 40s and 50s) to fish and golf” and that “some of Branson’s shows also continue through the winter.”

Johnson points out that although not mentioned in the article, the vast majority of Branson’s major attractions remain open year round. From a Lake Taneycomo sightseeing or dinner cruise with Main Street Lake Cruises to a voyage on the Titanic; Hollywood Wax Museum and Ripleys Believe It or Not to Tigers and Zipliners, even in the winter tBranson offers a myriad of fun and exciting things for Branson visitors to do. Summer or winter, Branson’s famed shopping remains a constant with its three major shopping malls remaining open along with Dicks 5 & 10 and most of Branson’s specialty shops

Branson was the only Missouri destination selected. Beside Branson, the other 14 Midwest Living “Great Midwest Winter Weekend Escapes” were, in alphabetical order, Bayfield, Wisconsin; Black Hills, South Dakota; Brainerd, Minnesota; Canoe Bay, Wisconsin; Chicago, Illinois; Crystal Mountain, Michigan; Dearborn, Michigan; Door County, Wisconsin; Hocking Hills, Ohio; Old Mission Peninsula, Michigan; Parke County, Indiana; Southwest Lake Michigan shore, St. Croix River, Wisconsin and Minnesota and Upper Peninsula, Michigan.

New 2013 Branson show season has Grand opening

Jarrett Dougherty the comedian in the "Pierce Arrow Show "cutting" up with members of the Pierce Arrow Quartet.

BRANSON, Mo., January 24, 2013 — “One of the many great things about Branson is the anticipation and excitement that the opening of each new show season in Branson brings as its shows incorporate new innovations, numbers, routines, acts, costuming and  choreography into their performances to provide their audiences with a fresh entertainment experience,” said Tammy Johnson, the Director of Operations for the Branson Tourism Center. Mike Patrick, General Manager & Producer of the Grand Jubilee show and the other shows at the “Grand Country Music Hall” agrees.

Patrick said, “When Grand Jubilee opened its 2013 Season on January 1, about 70 percent of the show’s music and 50 percent of its comedy was new.” He points out that there are certain musical numbers such as New South’s performance of “YMCA” and comedy routines that the audience expects and looks forward to that tend to stay in from year to year until there is an indication that the audiences wants a change. Patrick said that to have the 2013 version of Grand Jubilee ready for January 1 they began rehearsals in early November even as they performed their 2012 Christmas shows.

Typically, and 2013 was no exception, it is the new Grand Jubilee that leads Branson shows into their new season. Other shows have started their new 2013 Branson season during January and, as of today, The Official Show Schedule of Branson.Com, powered by the Branson Tourism Center, indicates that by the end of February the following shows, listed alphabetically with links provided to scheduling, pricing and other information, will be open:

World record breaking wooden roller coaster brings fresh Branson excitement

Outlaw Runs heart dropping nearly vertical first drop of more than 16 stories.

BRANSON, Mo., January 21, 2013 — “One of the reasons people come back to Branson time after time is because of the efforts of its live shows and attractions to keep what Branson offers fresh and exciting,” said Tammy Johnson, the Director of Operations for the Branson Tourism Center. “Silver Dollar City, Branson’s oldest and most popular attractions is a perfect example of that freshness and excitement with its world class festivals, practicing craftsmen, and dozens of rides always offering something fresh and new, but 2013 is extra special! Potential Branson visitors and locals alike are eagerly awaiting the opening of Outlaw Run, the park’s new first of a kind $10 million record breaking world class wooden coaster ride,” she added.

From its very first drop of more than 16 stories, 162 feet, the steepest wood coaster in the world, puts its riders nearly vertical at 81 degrees as its starts them on ride that will thrill even the most ardent roller coaster aficionado. During the approximately 1 minute and 30 second ride, the world’s second fastest wooden coaster will travel 2,937 feet as it reaches speeds of up to 68 miles per hour, but that’s not all. It is “the world’s first and only double barrel roll on a wood coaster, with a 720-degree (double) barrel roll,” will have nine periods of “air time” where there will be a feeling of floating and weightlessness and it is the only wood coaster to twist upside down.

Outlaw Run will be themed around stage coach travel in the old west with it riders riding the custom-designed “stagecoach” trains of “Silver Dollar City’s Western Missouri Stagecoach Company.” Brad Thomas, senior vice president, Silver Dollar City Attractions said, “”All generations will enjoy this bold and daring ride where the ‘good guys always win, leaving the bad guys in the dust'” as they go “on a journey of unexpected drops, thrilling twists and rolling inversions” passing through “a storied place where civility is waning, outlaws may lurk…”

Johnson also points out that Silver Dollar City Tickets purchased through the Branson Tourism Center give the purchaser two exciting and fun filled days at the park for the price of one.

Favorite Branson Breakfast spots

Grand Country Buffet is a favorite breakfast spot for visitors and locals alike.

BRANSON, Mo., January 19, 2013 — “Even with people eating Breakfast at their hotel or lodging as part of the amenities offered, one of the things many Branson visitors like to do while in Branson is go to one of Branson’s many restaurants for breakfast at least once during their stay with some having a family breakfast tradition that spans generations,” said Tammy Johnson, the Director of Operations for the Branson Tourism Center. “Earlier this week we asked the question, ‘Where’s your favorite place in Branson to eat Breakfast?’ on our Face Book Page,” she continued.

The top five listed, out of the 24 people named, in order were:

Grand Country Buffet, 1945 West 76 Country Boulevard – Known for the quality of its food and wide choice, its breakfast is no exception. As one local poster said, Grand Country Buffet “has the best tasting breakfast around. I live in Branson and I have ate in a lot of places for breakfast. The best place and friendless place in town. Every time we have company come in that’s the only place I will take them for breakfast.”

Billy Gail’s Café, 5291 Hwy 265 – It’s the only one of the five not on the Branson Strip. Billy Gail’s is particularly noted for its humongous pancakes, is a favorite of locals and tourists alike. One poster opined, “Billy Gails, is always the best if you can get in the parking lot.”

Bob Evans, 801 West Main Street (Highway 76) – Ok so technically, it is two blocks south on Highway 76 of where most people consider the Branson Strip starts. Bob Evans, a national chain, is noted locally, for the variety and quality of its breakfast offerings and its specialty breakfast items as reflected by one poster who said, “Bob Evans for their sausage gravy and biscuits- unlike any other!!!”

IHOP Restaurant, 3120 West 76 Country Boulevard – A national chain, located on the western edge of the strip at the junctions of Routes 76 and 376, IHOP is famous for the variety and quality of its pancakes and French toast.

Belgian Waffle and Pancake House, 3120 West 76 Country Boulevard, – Another favorite of locals and visitors alike. One poster noted, “I love their French toast!!”

Only two of the top five are national chains. Interestingly, even with the addition of “Cracker Barrel” there are only three national chains listed in the top 10 which includes “Clocker’s Cafe,” “Silver Dollar City Breakfast Buffet” and the “Farmhouse Restaurant.” Johnson suggests that while the answers to the question do not constitute any kind of valid scientific study there is a correlation between the answers and the names of spots where locals and  visitors eat breakfast commonly appearing on other reviews and forums such as the 1Branson.Com Dining Forum. One thing appears certain however, a great Ozark Breakfast is never  very far away in Branson!

Branson magic is no illusion

The unique one of a kind bird illusion of Dave and Denise Hamner is just part of the magic and amazing entertainment of the Hamner Barber Variety Show.

BRANSON, Mo., January 14, 2013 — “It’s no illusion, Branson’s magic shows are a ‘magical’ experience for the whole family,” said Tammy Johnson, the Director of Operations for the Branson Tourism Center . She goes on to point out that although known primarily for the variety and quality of its live music shows, Branson is also blessed with a variety of award winning magic shows offering something for every taste.

The Hamner Barber Variety Show features the spectacular magic of Dave and Denise Hamner who have won numerous awards for their magic including having twice received a “Merlin Award” from the International Magician Society. From the opening through the subtle beauty of Hamner’s presentation of the “Magic of the Silver Coins, ” the death defying excitement and danger of “Vertigo” and inspiration of the “Ark of the Lost Covenant” the illusions in this show keep audiences on the edge of their seats as illusions unfold and hold them in a constant state of excitement as to what was coming next not only in terms of the illusion, but the production, sets, and color that is part of each.

It has been described as “a thrill-a-second production packed full of astonishing disappearing acts, a helicopter appearing in 3 seconds flat, assistants cut in half, and other never-before-seen illusions.”

Al Capone’s Ozark Hideaway?

Al Capone's summer retreat?

BRANSON, Mo., January 5, 2013 — When Main Street Lake Cruises’ Lake Queen slipped her moorings at Main Street Marina in Branson Landing for her sightseeing cruise on beautiful lake Taneycomo the morning of January 4 most of the passengers on board expected to see majestic Ozark vistas, bluffs that are “tens of thousands” of years old, Bald Eagles and more. Some might even have expected a mention of the Baldknobbers, a vigilante group featured in Harold Bell Wright’s famous novel, “The Shepherd of the Hills” and a mainstay of local history. What most didn’t expect was anything tying one one the most “famous gangsters “of all time, Al Capone, to the Branson area..

Capone was a “famous” Chicago gangster during the prohibition era in Chicago and was the head of the “Chicago Mob.” Although no one was every tired for it, it is suspected that he was responsible for the infamous 1929 “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” in retaliation against Bugs Moran, the leader of a “rival gang” during which seven were brutally shot to death. Capone’s criminal career came to an end when he was convicted on federal charges of income tax evasion sentenced to federal prison in 1932, spending the majority of that sentence in Alcatraz, until his parole in 1939. The effects of his neurosyphilis, the repeal of prohibition in 1933 and his incarceration led to Capone’s retirement in Florida where he died of a heart attack at the age of 47.

The question comes to mind, “What does a Chicago gangster have to do with the Ozarks?” After gliding past just about the full length of Rockaway Beach’s scenic lake front, Captain Brian Ayers alerted the passengers to the ruins of a very old two story stone and wooden house at the foot of a bluff, immediately off the right side of the boat and on the opposite shore from Rockaway Beach. He pointed out that in its heyday Rockaway Beach was the premier vacation destination in southwest Missouri and that local legend has it that Al Capone, not only vacationed in Rockaway Beach, but stayed in that house while he was there because of its isolated location and water only approach.

There is no hard evidence that he did, but neither is there that he didn’t, but during the 20s he was known to disappear for periods of time. Could this house be one the places where he went? Who knows for sure, but one thing is certain, as Captain Ayers tells the story of Capone’s Ozarks  legend, it sure seems possible and one almost expects to see cigar smoke curling out the windows of the house.
